>> Oh the thneeds you can thwant! Dr. Seuss’ eco-themed book The Lorax = Beloved by kids and adults. The LA Times says the book’s gotten a “new popularity,” but the book’s actually been popular for quite a while now.

>> A game sans thneeds. I’m not sure why I find Ayiti: The Cost Of Life addictive, since the Unicef / Global Kids game’s supposed to be sort of depressing — Your task is to keep a poor Haitian family of 5 alive and well for 4 years. I’m proud to say I’ve learned to do it quite well — which doesn’t quite stop me from continuing to play it. Above’s the results from the session I’m most proud of.

>> America has a real thneed for more cars. In n+1:

Americans own 244 million motor vehicles—more than any other country by a wide margin. Yet we have only 203 million licensed drivers. Even if we all do our part and start driving continuously, we’d still need to leave 41 million cars parked. Cars pollute, contribute to global warming, kill more than 40,000 Americans a year, and injure some three million more in the process—and yet with Detroit begging for bailouts, and environmental and financial crisis upon us, history teaches us one undeniable fact: America needs more cars—now.

The article’s actually not anti-car — It’s a call for better car regulations that allow eco-friendly cars on the road more quickly.
