Clicklist: L.A. to get a Food Policy Task Foce and other eco-foodie news

Posted by Siel in clicklist, food (Friday September 4, 2009 at 12:55 pm)

peaches from the Santa Monica farmers market>> L.A.’s getting a Food Policy Task Force, announced Mayor Villaraigosa at the Farmers’ Market celebration yesterday, though members of said task force have not yet been identified. In addition, a bunch of L.A. restaurants, mostly already known to serve dishes with local ingredients, pledged to buy and serve locally grown food as much as possible.

>> In that vein, Slow Food USA’s Time for Lunch: National Day of Action happens Labor Day, Mon., Sept. 7. Join a potluck eat-in near you — six Labor Day eat-ins are planned in and around Los Angeles — with the goal to get the federal government to change school food programs and start serving healthy, sustainable food.

>> While you’re at it, you can pay what you want to join Slow Food. Joining not only puts your money toward supporting local, sustainable food and cuisine, but also gives you invites and discounts to fun events. Membership usually costs $60 a year; the pay what you want deal lasts until the end of September. (via mnn)

And some weird food-related ironies:

>> Apparently, healthy options on a menu makes us eat the fatty stuff: “Just looking at a healthy option on the menu can be enough to vicariously satisfy the healthy-eating goal, making people more likely to run for the indulgent foods.”

>> And in Portland, cyclists fought and won the right to eat junk food on the fly. A female cyclist can now feed her hub and 3 sons artery-clogging fast food cheeseburgers by biking through the drive-thru.
