>> El Dorado Avenue Elementary School’s gonna go grid neutral. Last week, the LAUSD school started installing a solar power system that’ll create as much energy as the school uses. Canoga Park High School started installing a similar system last month. LAUSD plans to install 50 megawatts of solar power by 2012.

>> Dorsey High School students are restoring habitat for the cactus wren in Culver City. The school’s Green House Program hopes to bring back the bird, which hasn’t been seen in the area for a decade.

>> LAPD’s got a new drought-resistant garden — with a big lawn? The grassy space will be watered efficiently and used as a public park — which, as I’ve said before, seems a justifiable reason for a lawn.

>> Organic pizza’s coming to Santa Monica and WeHo! Pizza Fusion’s opening a Santa Monica location at 2901 Ocean Park Blvd. Ste 123 in June, then a West Hollywood location at 7950 W. Sunset Blvd., Suite 104 sometime after that.

>> Following in the naughty treadmarks of Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus, Metro’s been fined $162,000 by the California Air Resources Board for “incomplete record-keeping of exhaust smoke emission tests and other violations in 2006 and 2007 for the small portion of its fleet and contract carriers that still operate diesel buses along with heavy duty tow trucks and other non-revenue vehicles.” Metro says it’s gonna do better.

  1. The photo on this post is absolutely priceless.

With the economic situation and with all the social issues in cities, I hope the school doesn’t fall victim to theft. Last year a US elementary school lost $31,000 worth of solar panels to theft :(

  2. I kinda miss the days when everyday was a new little art project, like cutting out a solar crown…
