Clicklist: Makeovers and do-overs

>> The bailout money we gave automakers is gonna come back to us — as a lawsuit. Car manufacturers plan to use some of the money to fight California’s bid to set tougher greenhouse gas emissions standards for vehicles.

>> Will the White House get solar panels again? Back in 1979, Carter installed solar panels on the White House, saying “This dependence on foreign sources of oil is of great concern to all of us.” Those panels were removed in 1986 to be stored until Unity College started using them in 1992. Now one of the panels are on display at Google. What I wanna know is, why did the panels get taken down from the White House, and where are the other 31 panels besides the one at Google? (via Short Sharp Science)

>> American Clay’s running a Room Makeover Contest. DIYers can show off their remodeling and renovating skills for a chance to win $1000 or American Clay products. You do, however, have to use American Clay’s eco-friendly wall finishing products to win.

  1. Two are on display at the Carter Library, the rest are still at Unity College: http://www.unity.edu/NewsEvents/News/UnityGoogle09.aspx
The same page also indicates that “President Ronald Reagan took the solar panels down in 1986 when the White House roof was repaired.”

I’m guessing that there was a fair amount of refurbishment necessary to bring the panels into working order after they were taken down. That Unity has stopped using them indicates that they may have reached the end of their functional lifespan.
