Clicklist: New green sights in Los Angeles

goats in downtown Los Angeles

>> Back in town: Goats in downtown L.A. Walk by Angel’s Knoll to see goats feeding. The professional eater-weeders displace more costly gas-powered weed whackers. “The job may also be done in record time if the weather stays cool. Staying away from hot days means less breaks for the four-legged workforce.” Earlier: Goats replace gas-guzzling weed whackers!

>> Growing in Pasadena: Phallic squash. At least I think it’s a squash. The urban homesteaders in Pasadena seem to be growing suggestive vegetables. Click for photographic proof. These people own some very cute looking goats, BTW.

>> Not extinct: Milk men. Non-lactose intolerant locavores will be happy to know that L.A. has local milk delivery service, thanks to Downey-based Rockview Farms. Get very fresh milk and other dairy products delivered to your doorstep. Yes, the milk comes from Cali cows; ask for the organic options.

>> Now navigable: The L.A. River. Back in 2008, when the Army Corps of Engineers said the river was unnavigable — and thus exempt from Clean Water Act protections — intrepid environmentalists kayaked down the river to prove the Corps wrong. Now, the EPA’s come down on the kayakers’ side. The kayakers, BTW, now have a movie called Rock The Boat.

>> Off the grid: A Street in Sun Valley. One of the L.A. River kayakers was Joe Linton, a.k.a. L.A. Creek Freak, who reports on the Elmer Avenue Green Street Project in Sun Valley. This green street is off the grid, with solar-powered street lights that aren’t connected to the electric grid and a rainwater capture system also independent of the city’s water grid. Check out Joe’s post to see photos of the underground water-saving gizmos, new sidewalks and curbs, and even a “depressed swale mini-creekbed center, complete with drought-resistant native landscaping.”

  1. I wish LA would make an effort to be more green by enforcing auto laws. California is the perfect state to outlaw gas powered vehicles and require GREEN cars. Come on, LA, take the green lead here!

  2. @ callie “California is the perfect state to outlaw gas”

Why? What makes California more suitable than any other? I agree it needs to happen but don’t think any state should be singled out first.
