I mailed off my iPod to Blake and waited to hear back what my iProblem was. A couple days later, I got an email from him, letting me know that my iPod was being shipped back. “I just simply swapped out the iPod’s hard drive connector,” Blake wrote. “I’m not going to charge for it since it took me about 2 minutes!”

>> How to get lots of traffic tickets: Drive a Hummer. “The study found those who drive the leviathans get 4.63 times as many tickets as the average driver, something the researchers attribute to the feeling of invincibility that comes from driving a rolling bank vault.” Earlier: Make your own subversive hummer slogan

>> How to escape morning traffic: LA County Bicycle Coalition’s first Car-free Fridays ride looks like it was a lot of fun, with City Council President Eric Garcetti joining in the two-wheeling fun.

>> Remember that new product safety law that could have put eco baby clothing companies out of business? Thankfully, the deadline for lead testing of children’s products has been delayed for a year. During that time, the law could get tweaked so that it isn’t so financially punitive for small businesses.

  1. That’s amazing. I just fixed an ipod that apple said was hopeless using a little screwdriver and a business card.

On the lead thing, as a parent of a toddler, I’m not particularly pleased. I’m sympathetic to the plight of the small businesses facing uncertainty caused, not by the law itself but, by the complete and utter failure of the Bush appointees to write regulations to implement the law. That’s their job and they’ve been sitting on their hands over there for months say “I dunno what’s gonna happen when the law takes effect.” It’s their job to decide what’s going to happen. It’s one of the Bush administrations final failures that’s causing me to continue not to know if the toys I bring into my home are harmful – nothing to celebrate.

  2. Many of the Hummer and SUV drivers seem to think that the conventions of safe, courteous driving don’t apply to them.
