crowded bike rack on Third Street Promenade Santa Monica

>> If you’re tired of trying to lock up at already-crowded racks on Third Street Promenade (mine’s the pink one above!), you’ll be glad to know that Santa Monica’s adding more than 400 bike racks this fiscal year, thanks to cash from Prop C, passed back in 1990. More than 170 of those are supposed to be installed downtown. I’m guessing the new racks at the Santa Monica Main Public Library are some of those 170; have you seen other new racks around?

>> Santa Monica city employees now have a bikeshare program. Called BIKE@WORK, this program lets employees borrow any one of 14 bikes at 8 city facilities. Want a bikesharing program at your Santa Monica workplace? Contact Annette Colfax at annette.colfax@smgov.net to get started.

>> Get ready: A greener Santa Monica Place reopens in 29 days on Aug. 6. The revamped shopping center will be more bike and pedestrian-friendly as well as more energy and water-efficient, thanks to greener landscaping, solar panels, and an energy management system.

>> Santa Monica Place sounds like it’ll be filled with lots of chain stores, but maybe the Buy Local Santa Monica website can fight that trend. The new online business directory profiles more than 170 businesses and keeps a running list of local events. Now, they just need to offer discounts, a la the DTLA resident card.
