- Shreking the government ad policy. Shrek ads’re gracing “streetlight poles that usually are allowed to carry only banners for neighborhood councils, official city programs or events put on by nonprofits,” because Million Trees LA gets some props at the bottom. (thnx Lisa; image from LA Times)
- Bring Your Own queen Anna will make you tango by playing the violin at tonight’s FREE Argentine Tango program at the LA Music Center Plaza, 6 – 10 pm.
- Become an Metro Governance Council member. Santa Monica residents’re invited to apply to be part of Metro’s Westside / Central Service Sector Governance Council. Download the application here (PDF).
- Greener than recycling: Shopping less. Buy fewer things and save money while saving the planet. (thnx Rafi)

I hope that Santa Monica gets a few applications from transit-knowledgeable people for the governance council opening they are being asked to nominate someone to fill.
In the San Fernando Valley, we are “blessed” with two elected officials who tend to be somewhat more concerned with their own municipalities than the sector as a whole (although I do give them credit for asking questions to broaden their knowledge), one member who is so focused on the line that runs nearest her home that almost every issue turns into something that could affect her line, and other members who try to keep a wide focus but are not overly knowledgeable about the whole area.
And me, who has been called “the best resource the council has” because I do know the whole system and ride it on a near-daily basis.
Westside/Central’s current chair is a transit user, but he could use another user voice to backstop him, so I encourage Santa Monica residents who know about transit to apply.
It’s not terribly time-consuming: You have to spend one evening a month at the meeting, plus be present for the public hearing when service changes are proposed. Metro pays you $100 per meeting as an “expense stipend”, so you won’t get rich, but it is satisfying to be a real part of the decision-making process on Metro service.
