>> The skinny on greenish eco-deodorants, by Kate Sheppard at Grist. Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal wins out, and I’m totally gonna try it. Earlier: The tale of two natural, vegan deodorants.
>> The skinny on the offshore drilling debate, from Slate’s Green Lantern. “Even the most optimistic estimates about offshore drilling—the exact ones pushed by its strongest proponents—promise no relief at the pump now and only a small impact later.”
>> The skinny on diet coke. Coke guzzling vegans who claim their diet’s super-eco bug me. Here’s why, as explained by Umbra. “The mildest thing we can say about your addiction … is that it wastes water. A harsher comment might be: You are actively complicit in global corporate water hogging, stealing a scarce resource from impoverished communities.”

Environmentalists who continually bash vegans and then claim they fit the “Angry Vegan Stereotype” when they reply – bug me.

Water…. such a precious resource. I agree with the position posted.

That is a disconnect to me. Most vegans I know are super conscious of their diets, and I don’t know any that are “coke guzzling.” Guess our mileage must differ.

My comment is in reference to TOM’s Deo. I was doing my eco best as well as trying to maintain a healthier way of keeping fresh & clean. Tom’s deo left me smelling worse than I would had I gone skin. I was the worse choice ever.
It could just be a chemistry thing, but just be aware that it isn’t for everyone.

I’ll be interested to hear about your experience and responses to the crystal deodorant. I’ve been using it for about a year and until recently have found it the best: not a sweat-suppressant, but also cutting the odor without attempting to mask it and not leaving the white residue. However, and this may be because I’ll whip it out a couple of times a day to reapply (therefore I’m dry–which I learned from the Grist article is a no-no), of late my armpits have gotten super super itchy! Painfully so. And since I’ve stopped wearing deodorant at all for the past week as an experiment, they have definitely calmed down. My contribution to this discussion is pretty ambivalent: the crystal is awesome! Except when it isn’t. Just wanted to contribute another piece of information to the crystal try-out.
best,

Lisa — Maybe I’ve been unlucky in meeting an inordinate number of coke-guzzling vegans. Even dated one for a bit who’d match me drink (coke) for drink (wine)….
Tugarpum — I’m not a fan of Tom’s deo either! I had the same experience (follow the “earlier” link on that item for deets).
Will report back on the crystal stuff — and will be careful not to overapply!
