Clicklist: Sustainable transport update

>> Mass transit: Popular, but cash poor. “About 10.7 billion rides were taken on mass transit in 2008, up about 4% from the previous year, according to the American Public Transportation Assn…. Financially, many transit agencies are struggling. OCTA raised fares about 25% in January and cut 50,000 hours of bus service on Monday because of declining sales tax revenue and cuts in state funding by the Legislature. Metrolink is likely to raise fares this summer, and the MTA is also contemplating serious bus service cuts because of the loss of state money.”

>> Bicycles: Could one day be less hated by non-bikers. Long-time NYC biker Robert Sullivan notes the biking life’s better in Manhattan — and makes a modest proposal for getting along with drivers and pedestrians: Stay off the sidewalks and ride in the direction of traffic, signaling and stopping at lights. >> Car sharing: Coming back to L.A. We used to have Flexcar, until it merged with Zipcar, which pulled its cars out of all ‘hoods except UCLA. Now, the L.A. City Council wants to encourage car sharing in the city and is giving Zipcar 20 free parking spaces — for 20 sharable cars near UCLA and USC — for a year-long pilot program. It’s unclear when these new cars’ll actually be available for rental though.
