Discover vs Viacom

>> In brand news: Consumers can’t tell which brands and companies are green, and which are greenwashed, finds a NewScientist study:

In some cases there were dramatic mismatches between perceptions and reality. Take media firm Discovery Communications: its environmental impact, per dollar earned, is almost indistinguishable from TV and movie giant Viacom. Yet Discovery has a stellar green reputation that Viacom does not enjoy – which could be due to Discovery’s content, which includes Animal Planet TV and websites such as TreeHugger.

Funnily, Discovery’s Planet Green featured the survey on its web show, Planet 100. No, the show doesn’t mention Discovery’s one of the companies fingered as less-green-than-perceived by NewScientist. Check out the interactive graphic at NewScientist to see if your green brand perceptions are in line with reality.

>> In bicycle news: L.A. County got 2 new bike stations today — one each in Claremont and Covina — and a bicycle thief got chased down and caught by a couple bike couriers in downtown L.A. Earlier: Bike thefts rose 29% last year.

>> In bar news: MNN’s put together a list of 10 great eco-bars in the U.S. The majority are in California, and Santa Monica’s Library Alehouse and Pourtal make the list.
