>> Gulf Oil Spill: Still spilling, still funny. Keep LOLing — by reading @BPGlobalPR, the fake BP Public Relations twitter account. Sample tweet:

The L.A. Times has more on the tweeter behind the LOLs. And in other consolatory news: Everyone from the Obama administration to Californian voters are aligning themselves against offshore drilling — at least for now.
>> Balloons: Festive decorations, or marine animal killers? That’s the current debate going on over Rancho Palos Verdes’ Memorial celebration plans, which include a release of “1,500 balloons in the air at Green Hills Memorial Park on Monday in commemoration of the fallen soldiers.” Problem is, when those balloons burst and land in the oceans, birdies and other marine life will eat up the jellyfish-like bits and suffer, even die.
>> Cali beaches: Cleaner, though most of the still dirty ones are in L.A. County (PDF). Heal the Bay’s latest Beach Report Card gave 90 percent of California’s beaches good to excellent grades. However, five of the 10 “Beach Bummers” that earned the lowest grades are in L.A. County. Also, thanks to Schwarzenegger’s cutting funding for beach water quality monitoring, fewer beaches are being surveyed — and future monitoring efforts are in jeopardy. Yay!
The next California gubernatorial election happens Nov. 2, 2010 — coincidentally the day after my birthday. Vote then, and don’t forget to vote on June 8 too!

I vote for animal killers (on the balloons). At my nature center, we don’t allow balloons for birthday parties. Of course, that doesn’t always stop people, but thankfully we don’t get too many. It’s just one of those things that is really, really pretty but also really, really destructive.

Interesting re: the nature center rules! I wonder if public beaches / parks will start adopting similar rules — I don’t know of them if they already exist –
