Clicklist: The latest “foods” — with lead, ammonia, and E.coli

Posted by Siel in clicklist, environment, food (Monday January 4, 2010 at 1:25 pm)

Food Inc.>> Have your cavity-inducing candy, and eat lead too. Chen PiMei Candy from China and Ticorindo Candy from Mexico have too much lead in them, say Cali officials.

>> Have your ammonia-treated burger, and eat E.coli too! Remember those grayish looking ammonia-treated “meat” in Food, Inc.? Turns out treating cow bits with ammonia doesn’t make the resulting burger filler E.coli free. Even worse, the New York Times reports “The federal school lunch program used an estimated 5.5 million pounds of the processed beef last year alone.”

>> If that news turned you vegan — though hopefully not the processed soy slab eating and Diet Coke drinking uneco type — you’ll be glad to know that a vegan bakery called Babycakes NYC opened its L.A. shop this morning.

  1. The organization that I work for, PCRM, has a campaign to prevent the government from dumping surplus meat into the school lunch program and hurting the kids who are already in the worst position. You can read more at http://www.healthyschoollunches.org/

Since I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family that could provide a packed lunch of healthy food every day, it was a real eye-opener when I learned about the crap that is put in school lunches and how few options the kids on the school lunch program have.

  2. Thanks for the link, Erica :) Did you participate in Slow Food’s Eat In last year?
