The organization that I work for, PCRM, has a campaign to prevent the government from dumping surplus meat into the school lunch program and hurting the kids who are already in the worst position. You can read more at http://www.healthyschoollunches.org/
Since I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family that could provide a packed lunch of healthy food every day, it was a real eye-opener when I learned about the crap that is put in school lunches and how few options the kids on the school lunch program have.
