>> Wondered what’s happening with the L.A. River Revitalization plan — and the High Speed Rail plan we voted for in 2008? The two plans are clashing. Reports the L.A. Times:

The rail plan … would use Union Station as a major hub, and the line probably would run along the Los Angeles River. But some elected officials and residents believe the proposed rail alignment would seriously clash with their vision for the area, which involves replacing the dilapidated industrial proprieties along the river with green space, recreation areas and community facilities.

It sounds like new plans will be drawn up so the two plans no longer clash. BTW — Joe Linton, the dude in the photo and quoted in the story, will be at Blogger Beach Cleanup on Saturday. Will you?

>> Wondered what happened after that Mandeville Canyon Road incident, when two cyclists got injured by an angry driver who slammed on his brakes in front of them? The trial’s underway:

[Cyclist] Christian Stoehr was catapulted and flew over the car, landing on the pavement…. He testified that he started crawling toward the car. [The driver Christopher Thomas] Thompson, who was wearing blue scrubs, got out and was shouting at him to get his bike out of the road, Stoehr said.

>> Wondered what happened with Dole’s threat to sue over “Bananas!,” a film that about the legal clash between Nicaraguan banana plantation workers and Dole? Dan Koeppel reports:

After pressure from the Swedish government – efforts to boycott the banana company were underway, with a strong chance they would spread to other EU nations – Dole dropped a lawsuit it had filed against Swedish filmmaker Fredrik Gertten and his film, “BANANAS!*”

  1. ok… I just wanna steer traffic to my blog, no?

For folks who want an expanded explanation of my take on the high-speed rail and river revitalization, see this blog entry:
    http://lacreekfreak.wordpress.com/2009/10/18/making-high-speed-rail-and-river-restoration-work-together/

Also – for the downstream areas: there are separate plans for Long Beach and for Compton Creek. The whole lower river is also part of the county’s Los Angeles River Master Plan. For more info see:
    http://lacreekfreak.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/whats-the-plan/

and, Siel, I need to get you a photo of one of greener parts of the river… such a barren shot you use!

  2. Well, I do have cuter photos in my pictorial ode to the LA River, but isn’t there also beauty in desolation? :)

Thanks for the great links! You were really the perfect interviewee for the article, since you clearly live the de-car’d life but also are a creek freak :)
