Clicklist: Upcycled handbags and horrors

I guess today’s going to be handbag day

Garbage wallet by you.

>> Get fashionable garbage bags. Women in New Delhi turn flimsy plastic bags into gorgeous handmade totes and wallets for eco-fashionistas.

>> CraftyNest’s got a free, photo-illustrated tutorial to turn tank tops into totes. The results are really quite cute! (via Outsapop Trashion)

>> Don’t make ugly upcycled purses. Regretsy pans Birch Bark Purse: “How about we just put this in the fireplace and call it Christmas?” But compared to other handmade duds like the turtle claw pin and “kentucky frilled chicken” that make it onto Regretsy, I don’t think this wooden purse is so bad –

>> Don’t commit crimes of eco-fashion. Jasmin Chua at Ecouterre looks at 6 terrifying crimes of eco-fashion that give dressing sustainably a bad name. Asks Jasmin about the solar power bra: “can someone explain the point of the electronic scoreboard and pair of drinking pouches nestled (strategically?) against the bustline?”

  1. Pre-owned handbags often get left out of the “Eco-fashion” / upcycle discussion, but buying fabulous- not just vintage, but just (gasp!) used handbags is gentle on the planet and pocketbook. I always search for bags that I’ve got my eye on in the Secondary Market first.

  2. I definitely agree — Most of my purses are simply pre-owned, not upcycled :)
