>> Bike thefts rose 29% last year — which means nearly 2000 bikes were reported stolen in 2009. The numbers are probably much higher though, since they don’t reflect stolen bikes that weren’t reported to the police. Have you ever gotten a bike stolen? And if so, did you report the theft?

Sadly, I had two stolen in the past year. The first one I did report, but the second one I did not.

Every bike I’ve owned (less the one I currently own) has been stolen. I think I reported less than half the thefts. I’ve been pretty careful with them in my adult life and have only lost two since I started college (although one of them was almost stolen but the thief was too short to ride it away and dumped it in the grass fifty feet from where I’d left it).

Don — Your comment made me LOL! My short legs would definitely make me a bad bicycle thief too — though just to be clear, there are other reasons I don’t steal bikes :P
