Clicklist: Why smart people won’t eat veggies, and other self help tips

>> How to repress bad memories of Bush’s presidency: Read an imaginary retrospective of Gore’s presidency. (via kottke) “Of course, the biggest disappointment was Gore’s failure to handle Hurricane Katrina properly. Not only did the massive evacuation of New Orleans prove a costly and time-consuming overreaction, since the levees – fortified in 2003 – held up fine.”

>> How to magically learn to love healthy veggies: Get a scientist to implant a false memory convincing you you’ve always loved the stuff. “Unsurprisingly, people who have poor memories to begin with tend to fall prey to implanted memories, food or otherwise. Smarter people are also slightly less likely to be duped.” The scientist behind the study hopes to use this false memory strategy to help people eat better. Unfortunately, it seems people who’re smart and have good memory recall are beyond help.

>> How to tell if Joaquin Phoenix is faking it: You can’t, but Slate’s Dana Stevens says “Watching Two Lovers is the best argument for the validity of the prank theory. There’s just no way an actor capable of this level of precision and attention to detail can be simultaneously spiraling down some funky mental rabbit hole. (Is there?)” If you have no idea what Dana’s talking about, read Gawker’s story: Joaquin Phoenix’s Letterman Disaster — or just watch the clip below.

>> How to get drunk while watching Lost: Play the Lost drinking game! (via kottke) “Take a sip whenever …. You know that Charlotte is evil, because, come on, you know she is.” Or here’s my rule: Take a sip whenever Charlotte tries to speak Korean and you can’t understand a fucking thing she’s saying. That rule would assume you understand Korean spoken by people who actually speak Korean at least semi-fluently, and that you’re not reading the subtitles. Who’s getting drunk with me?!

  1. interestingly, Joaquin Phoenix’s appearance on Letterman looked a lot like his acting on Walk the Line, when he (Johnny Cash) was scraping bottom

  2. I think this is a case of purposeful destruction but not ‘self-destruction’ the man that everyone tuned in expecting to see on Letterman is not Joaquin’s ‘self’. It is a public image. There have been plenty of artists who, for one reason or another, feel compelled to trash what a team of self-interested business people have helped them build. Musicians smash and burn guitars and drum kits to express this kinda thing. All actors have are themselves.

Crispin Glover comes to mind. Letterman must hate how they choose to pull this poop on his time.
