- Yuban’s ad, “The coffee you make can make a difference,” is just that — an ad. Yes, about 30% of the stuff’s Rainforest Alliance certified, but that doesn’t guarantee a minimum price for the farmer. Plus, this endeavor represents less than 2% of Kraft’s (Yuban’s company) coffee purchases.

- Santa Monica gets a step closer to an outdoor smoking ban

Hi Siel
While I can appreciate SM’s smoking ban, I hate to see a City Council so concerned with something to “minor” versus the problems we have with the homeless people in this city.
Every time I have someone come visit from out of town, they are astounded by the amount of people that are just sleeping on the Promenade all day, urinating in the alleys, and setting up encampments in the park.
Truthfully, so am I…I just wish the City would do something to help these people with jobs, shelter or something else..I think spending their time on something this important would be of more benefit than a smoking ban.

But you could say that about almost all of our concerns and preoccupations. I.e. Why am I writing about paraben-free lube when there’s still world hunger? Why write a coffee review when there’s a war in Iraq?
I guess my point is that just cuz the city council’s concerned about smoking (which, btw, kills lotsa people) doesn’t mean it doesn’t care at all about the homeless. Now we could argue that perhaps more city resources should be spent on 1 thing or another — but that needs to take into account what’s being done already, and what remains to be done, in terms of these various issues.
So — perhaps you might be willing to research and give us an assessment on the homelessness issue in Santa Monica? Here’s where you can start your research :)
