[All the de-car-ing posts are here. Month 3's here.]
My efforts to de-car, in dollars and cents [updated 9/2/06, cuz I totally forgot I'd gotten a new blinker]:
- $ 95 for gas (My excuse is that I was driving ’round looking for a new place! And I gave no money to ExxonMobil).
- $105 per month of insurance (go Progressive!).
- $30 for new blinker (the sad cost of theft…)
$230 total for August 2006
Goal for Sept: So — $230′s not bad. But I can’t really set a real goal till I move into my new place Oct. 1. Yes, I found a place for myself (no roommates!). Yay!

Your series about decaring is wonderful. I am currently getting ready to move to LA and am a bit worried about how I will continue my sans-car lifestyle. Many have told me that it is practically impossible to do this in LA. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this.

I’ve been carless for a couple of years in LA. I find it less stressful without a car in LA. I never have to worry about parking and car expenses. When a car is needed I have Enterprise and Avis are a few blocks away. I find that downtown is one of the few places that doesn’t require a car. Santa Monica/Venice area may qualify as well, if you have a bike.

Thanks Megs :) Hope you have a safe move over, and that you enjoy living here! Welcome!
Jason — So I take it you live in downtown? V. cool that you’ve adopted a carless lifestyle. I def. don’t need a car around Santa Monica, but it’s a challenge cuz it’s hard to get anywhere outside Santa Monica without a car (like getting to Hollywood, say)…
