De-car-ing, step 5: Bike farther!

Posted by Siel in de-car-ing,environment,losangeles (Sunday July 9, 2006 at 11:31 am)

[Here's step 4]

The West Side Green Drinks went carbon neutral — but what about our getting there?

Summer, Anna, and I had been carpooling from Santa Monica — better than all driving solo, but still a petro-dependent method –

So: After literally months of deliberation, we finally decided to bike to Green Drinks last Thursday!

The distance: 11.2 miles, one way! (Here’s the route).

We hit only a few snafus: One of Summer’s lights fell off, and once in a while I yelped a lil cuz I get scared when using the left turn lane on a bike –

But we got there intact, a lil sweaty and energized :)

Thanks to Anna for leading the pack! By the end of the night we’d each biked over 22 miles — and effectively burned off the booze…

I’m proud to say I made the trip in red heeled loafers :P

  2. Another reason why biking is awesome is that you can repair your vehicle yourself. e.g. re attaching a bike light. way to go!

  3. Here is an awesome bike sharing program being field tested in the SF Bay area… EasyConnect… no more being stranded at work riding the metro…

  4. Bikes really do rule. There are limitations as to distance, but during rush hour, bikes whiz past all the cars in wait — read loafers or not –
