Earth Hour concert at LA Live 3/28

Last year, Los Angeles didn’t bother to get on board with Earth Hour — leading one reader to bemoan our city and blame all eco-woes on Villaraigosa.

Perhaps Villaraigosa took heed, because Earth Hour in L.A. this year — 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm on Sat., March 28 — is gonna be a huge extravaganza. All Angelenos are invited to a FREE event at Nokia Plaza at L.A. LIVE, hosted by Villaragosa himself and featuring DJ Tony Okungbowa from the Ellen Degeneres Show, the Agape Choir, and a surprise guest.

Don’t want to fight the crowds? Wine and dine by candlelight at one of the many local restaurants, bars, and hotels that are not only turning off their lights but also serving special Earth Hour menu items. Make a reservation by browsing the OpenTable Earth Hour list.

Or take in smaller performances at iO West, Groundlings, The Comedy Store, Amoeba Records, El Ray Theater, El Capitan Theater, House of Blues and Upright Citizens Brigade theaters. All will turn off exterior lights; some are planning half-lit performances.

Santa Monica too’s participating in Earth Hour, turning off all non-essential lighting — including the Pier Ferris Wheel! We’ll be joining 1500 cities globally — 100 in the U.S. — that’ll also be going dark. Visit the Earth Hour LA website for updates, or RSVP (not required) on the Facebook page.

  1. it seems strange to host earth hour at nokia plaza, which pumps who knows how much energy into their lighting and electronic signage every day.

  2. Well, think about how much energy’ll be saved that hour, if it helps –
