A sticky key's a great source of writerly inspiration, I've found :) My sentences get a lot more creative when I have to avoid using certain letters. Think A Void :)

I have a 2 year old LG EnV with Verizon. It is still working okay although the A key on the QWERTY has been sticking. I don't plan to replace it any time soon. I also have a BlackBerry 8830 with Sprint service through work. Luckily, I don't have to talk on it hardly ever.

Sprint doesn't work that great in my apartment, so I don't plan to switch to Credo. I would rather give them my money than Verizon, but I need something that works.

Like Jenn, I feel paralyzed with some of these decisions so I just avoid them for as long as possible. Whenever it comes time to replace my personal phone, I plan to research green options, refurbs, and the radiation.

I manage our Sprint account at work, so I make sure to keep all broken/discarded devices out of the landfills.

Beth -- I fished the comment out of spam! Thanks for letting me know -- This sometimes happens to longish comments, esp. with links. Unfortunately the comments show up in order of the time submitted (vs published) -- so future comment readers may be confused by yr second comment. Oh well :P

Re: Radiation -- I pretty much never have the phone against my head, but I hear ya. This is something that really needs to be regulated.

jenn -- I too am all for reusing. In fact, once I was done testing the Reclaim, I gave it to a friend who had a near-dead Blackberry with Sprint service. She switched over her service to the new phone and has been using it! Oddly, even though Credo uses Sprint's service, I was unable to simply transfer over my own service to the Reclaim -- the phone had to be a "Credo phone," said the rep. This is perhaps the biggest downside of credo. The company itself has got green values at its core, but it does not make using refurbished / used phones easy. Nor does it have a wide phone selection....

Jenn -- "Paralyzed" is a good way of describing how I was dealing with the phone issues too. My phone had seriously been shutting off at random for a long long time -- like yours, not battery-related -- and as you can see, it was no longer pretty to look at, what with the paint chipping off. Yet it really took me a long time to actually decide to upgrade, even though the Blackberry was free (with renewed service contract) --

Amazing. I too have had my current basic phone for about 2 or 3 years, and it too has been shutting itself off of its own accord (not battery-related, and always when I'm waiting for a call), and I too was thinking about the Reclaim. I was just in the Sprint store looking at it last night, in fact. Even though my current phone is clearly ready to be retired, I'm loathe to buy a new phone for all the eco-reasons above-- plus, add in the Coltan/Congo/Gorilla issue, and I'm just paralyzed. I'd totally forgotten about the refurbs (thanks, Beth!) so maybe I'll check that out and see what I can score that way.

I always go for the "Who has a phone to get rid of" to keep 'em out of the landfill. Paid a friend $50 for my SONY Ericsson (which I now hate) about 2 years ago, am getting a Blackberry Pearl from another friend this week (free!)... I hate shopping for phones. I hate phones with features I don't want or need which use more energy - like cameras - and why does "silent" almost always have to "vibrate"? I don't want a phone that can get on the internet at all - I'm always accidentally hitting buttons and connecting to download from the "Media Mall" - which costs $$ even if I don't browse or click on anything (what a racket!).

My idea of a green phone:
- re-use someone else's phone
- new - minimal features (ie - phone, address book & sms, monochrome LED screen instead of color), high recycled content

My experiences with buying refurbished phones off Ebay have all been uniformly poor so I can't say I recommend it (though the vendors are always good with returns and refunds).

Crap. I just left a comprehensive comment and it didn't show up. Can you check your spam folder? There were several links in the comment, and I know Akismet filters out comments with a lot of links.

Great post, Siel. Very comprehensive. One more thing, don't know if you've mentioned this in a previous post, but Environmental Working Group has compiled a list of cell phones and how much radiation they give off.

Unfortunately, the level of radiation from my MotoQ9c is unknown: http://www.ewg.org/cellphoneradiation/Get-a-Safer-Phone?query=&provider_id=14&brand=Motorola

I'm getting brain cancer, I just know it.

The Reclaim is gives off a pretty high level of radiation compared to the top 10 phones.

And the Blackberry is way, way up there:
