Emerald City: Visionary shoes

Latest from Emerald City, my enviro-blog at LAtimes.com

>> Visionary: West Hollywood’s new one-stop eco-boutique. If your shopping list includes everything from a $3 natural wood crayon set to a $26 make-it-yourself eco-cleaning kit, to a $500 Linda Loudermilk designer jacket, your new favorite eco-shop’s just opened its doors.

>> Green shoes: A reality show and a Simple pair. “Project Runway” fans: Did you know there’s an online shoe design reality show? “FN Shoestar,” sponsored by Nine West, recently challenged its designers to create sustainable uppers for a sandal. The result: Pretty crunchy-looking shoes.

>> Polar bears to plastic bags: Jonah Goldberg’s anti-eco evangelism. In an LA Times column, conservative Jonah Goldberg declares polar bears are thriving and shouldn’t be listed as threatened (much less endangered). WTF?

>> ABC News wants you to air your imaginary environmental report. If you want the drama of worst-case scenarios that evoke fear and panic, you have to turn to the U.S. — and even better, to U.S. television.

>> Looking at climate change in 2100, Google Earth-style. Put Google Earth together with British scientists, and you get “Climate Change In Our World,” an “interactive animation showing how climate change and global temperature rises could affect our world over the next 100 years.”

>> L.A. beaches get cleaner — due to drought. The good news: Our beaches are cleaner and healthier! The bad news: They’re cleaner and healthier because we’re in a drought! That means less rain — which means less urban runoff and less ocean pollution.

>> Volunteer for a bike organization (Bike Activism, Part 2). Cyclist Alex Thompson details the best bike volunteering options in L.A.: “In L.A., I know of five organizations where you can volunteer to help cyclists: CICLE, the three bike repair collectives – the Bike Oven, the Bicycle Kitchen, and the Bikerowave – and the Los Angeles Bicycle Coalition.”

And a couple linky posts:
>> A.M. Greenlist: Pay $4+ a gallon or go Metro for free concerts

>> A.M. Greenlist: Pollution deaths and regulations
