And M -- I agree. I think often when businesses fight against these proposals, it tends to be a knee-jerk reaction that's not really thought out. Of course, change is always difficult and can seem frightening. And infrastructure issues do need to be worked out so people can indeed get to shops / restaurants easier sans car. But it makes more sense to fight for better infrastructure than to fight against parking fees in the long run.

Yay! Lowenthal and Shoup are heroes of mine!! Parking is really shapes our cities, and yet it's sort of an invisible issue that a lot of people aren't very aware of. As a car-free person, I didn't think much about parking until I read Shoup's excellent book... now it's an issue that I keep an eye on.

For a good introduction to Shoup and parking issues I recommend these two short documentaries:

Thanks for the excellent post, Siel!

Yay! This does sound pretty good! I've experienced many of those things you mentioned as someone that is car free.

I think some businesses don't think about how having all that foot and bike traffic helps bring people in. Both make is so easy just to stop in a shop and look around without the burden of finding parking for your car. I also have learned way more about areas and how to get around LA (not just the freeways) and what sort of businesses are nearby by transporting myself in any method but driving. Even car pooling lets more people just be passengers and observe what is going on outside of traffic. I think once you're out of your car, you're outside more and you begin to care about and understand the impact of cars on the community.
