Friday Freebies: PeaceKeeper Eco-Sensual Lip Balm

Posted by Siel in freebies (Friday December 21, 2007 at 8:26 am)

A twice-weekly sharing of eco-shwag.

I’ve seen PeaceKeeper cosmetics all over the place — but didn’t really know much about the company. So when I got the PeaceKeeper Eco-Sensual Lip Balm in a shwag bag, I did some research:

Apparently, PeaceKeeper donates all of its after-tax distributable profits to “women’s health advocacy and urgent human rights issues.” However, the company has yet to turn a profit, it seems, judging by a note on the website that states “once profitable a top-five accounting firm will carefully audit the corporation’s financial records and information regarding this audit will be available on our website at the end of the year.”

Hmmmm…. So does that mean NO money’s been given to advocacy groups thus far? No — PeaceKeeper also gives one half of one percent of gross revenues to charity. In addition, for a few products, each item sold sends a specific amount — usually 80 cents to a dollar — to charity.

I’m not quite sure how this complicated scheme compares to, say, Nau’s 5% of revenues to charity dealio, but it sounds like PeaceKeeper’s trying to do good things.

The balm itself is vegan, 73% organic, and contains only safe ingredients (I checked each item on the ingredient list on Skin Deep). And it’s made by people paid fair wages to boot.

I haven’t tried it yet though, so I hope whoever ends up getting the balm will let me know how they liked it. Comment or email by Sunday to get into the drawing, which happens Monday. US addresses only.

  7. Hi, I have chronic sinusitis and the medicines I take constantly leave my mouth dry. Then, my lips end up getting red and sore. I like the fact that it is vegan because I have been a vegetarian for years!
