Friday freebies: Practecol Remote Control 8 Outlet Surge Strip

Posted by Siel in freebies (Friday July 9, 2010 at 7:14 am)

Twice-weekly green giveaways.

Practecol Remote Control 8 Outlet Surge Strip

Today’s giveaway is for the would-be vampire power slayer. One lucky winner will win a Practecol Remote Control 8 Outlet Surge Strip that makes it easier to cut off power to devices when they’re not in use — thereby saving you money on your power bill.

I’ve been using Practecol’s other energy-saving products; this one was sent along with those for review, but is simply too big for my apartment. This Surge Strip has eight outlets, two of which are “always on” so you can use them for electronics that need constant power, like a digital clock. The other six outlets can be turned on and off with a simple switch on a remote. Use those outlets for electronics you only need on some of the time — like your TV and VCR. And in case you’re the type who always loses her remote, the Surge Strip comes complete with screws and wall brackets so you can turn your remote control into a wall switch.

Want a Practecol Surge Strip of your own? Get it at Target for $19.99; the device can save you about $84 a year. Or to try your luck at winning one free, comment by Thurs., July 15 to get into the drawing, which’ll happen Fri., July 16 (more info on freebies here). U.S. addresses only.

  1. I’d love to have one of these! I plan on buying some of these when I move this summer, so I appreciate your awesome reviews. I would have loved these in my last apartment — I used a normal power strip to turn off my micro every time (luckily, it was easy to access the button), but this would have been great for our TV/DVD/etc.

And for those that doubt unplugging really helps: I was able to get our electric bill for a 2 bedroom apartment with an electric stove down to $15-20 a month. And that was with paying extra to support wind/solar/alternative energy! It can definitely be done :-)

  3. I’ve wanted to try one of these for awhile, my desk could really use the help. I like that it includes a remote, I can see people who are less eco minded, using this for things like their entertainment center, since they wouldn’t have to walk across the room to flip the switch.

  10. I could really use one of these! I have to hide all my surge protectors with an active toddler and the remote would be awesome.

  11. Would love to try this! The outlets in my old apartment are all in very inconvenient locations.

  12. Hi! I appreciate your blog. My bf doesn’t believe me when I say that unplugging is the way to saving the earth. I have been obsessively unplugging appliances, phone chargers, computer adapters, etc. in my new apartment. Guess what? My bill for June was down by 20%. The extra effort really went a long way. That’s a savings of about $8 for this months!

  13. Right after I saw your original blog post I immediately put this one my “to buy at Target” list. Most of my outlets are covered by furniture which really makes it a hassle to take the time and turn off the surge protector.

  17. I would love to win this to stop wasting electricity on “vampire” electronics when I’m not using them. It’s so hard for me to remember to turn off the regular power strips!

  18. I want this badly! I unplug everything to conserve electricity. My husband thinks I’m ruining the television by unplugging it all the time!

  26. I would love to win one of these! We have the TVs and boxes that could stand to be turned off regularly. Not to mention the computer/printer setup . . .

  28. I want one of these so bad! I’ve been doing my best to practice conservation of both things and money too, so I try not to buy things I already have. Because I already have several power strips, I have been resisting the urge to buy new ‘smarter’ ones. I just unplug a lot of devices, which gets annoying.

  29. would love to win this power strip – I have a similar one set up to my office computer and it is great – love seeing all the little lights shut off when the power strip goes off. would love one for my husbands home office.
