Club soda chuggers — Here’s a giveaway for you. One lucky green LA girl reader will win a Fountain Jet Seltzer Starter Kit by SodaStream, a maker of home soda-making machines!
This starter kit comes with everything you need to begin making your own club soda or seltzer water — so you can save money while also avoiding all those aluminum cans or plastic bottles store-bought soda comes in. The pack has a Fountain Jet Home Soda Maker, a 60 liter carbonator, and 2 carbonating bottles.
To see how the soda maker works, watch Grist’s Umbra make her own SodaStream club soda!
Each carbonator will give you up to 120 liters of soda, after which you can take advantage of SodaStream’s CO2 exchange program to swap out your empties for refilled carbonators. SodaMix flavors are also available if plain club soda’s too bland for you. The mixes are free of high fructose corn syrup, but the full ingredient list isn’t on the website — so I recommend asking for more details before purchasing them. You can, of course, also flavor your soda yourself by concocting your own syrups.
Comment by Thursday to get into the drawing, which’ll happen Friday (more info on freebies here). US addresses only; no PO Boxes.

I was just reading about making your own soda last week. Sounds interesting. Have you tried it (this brand or other) Siel?

I didn’t even know this existed!! I absolutely must win one of these. I drink tap water except for when I absolutely have to have the bubbly goodness of sparkling.

I, too, did not know this existed…

This is a brilliant idea and an excellent use of engineering brainpower. Hope I win!
Comment by Erin — February 5, 2010 @ 10:21 am
oh my gosh, this looks like it could be a TON of fun to use..my husband likes to buy pelligrino from costco all the time, so this would be a nice replacement for all the glass bottles we purchase every 2 weeks..much better for the environment
thank you for entering my name into the draw :)

This is something that is on my wish list. Would love to be able to cross it off.

I really want one of these! ooo! I hope I win!
Comment by Sarah Auerswald — February 5, 2010 @ 11:29 am
I’ve been thinking about buying one! We use a Brita for water, but I love sparkling water and it seems like this is one of the few options that offers a cartridge exchange program.
Is it very bulky? I’ve been curious to see one in person.
Comment by Rachel (heart of light) — February 5, 2010 @ 12:04 pm
We buy cans of sparkling water regularly so we could really use this!
Comment by susan — February 5, 2010 @ 12:11 pm
I know a few people who have these and they love them. The bubbly water also helps conquer any fleeting craving for a soda.
Comment by T L — February 5, 2010 @ 12:12 pm

My husband and I are seltzer fanatics; we go through so many cases. The idea of being able to make our own is exciting for us AND the environment!
Comment by Anna — February 5, 2010 @ 1:37 pm
I’d like to enter, thanks!
Comment by Evan — February 5, 2010 @ 2:44 pm
That’s so compact and sleek! I wish they’d let you have the canister refilled at your local homebrew store instead of having to order replacements through the brand. It’s still cool, though, and would make some delightful cocktails at home sans bottles and cans.
Comment by Jessi — February 5, 2010 @ 2:45 pm
I am old enough to remember seltzer delivery to my parents’ house. Now I NEED a Sodastream to take its place. I love seltzer. Enter me in the drawing please.

I saw a demonstration on it at an expo and its so awesome how small it is. Imagine how much plastic you would save.

Holy Cow! Are you kidding me? I’ve been itching for one of those every since Beth @FPF wrote about her soda maker…I just haven’t been able to justify getting one though…But winning one, well, that’s an entirely different beast! :-)
Thanks, as always, for the chance.
Comment by Kim — February 5, 2010 @ 4:04 pm
I would love to win one of these…I love soda but I hate what all the sugar and hfcs in most of them (especially the less expensive brands) do to your body and teeth. My boyfriend and I had talked about making our own using lemon, mint, or other natural flavors, but the machine itself is just expensive enough to be cost-prohibitive right now…
I’d love to make natural sodas for my friends and co-workers too

Comment by Katie K. — February 5, 2010 @ 11:09 pm
I have been dying to get one of these! I watched the Umbra video and it’s just so easy. Plus, I’m pregnant and drinking sparkly water is about as exciting as it gets theses days…count me in! Thanks!

OMG my husband is working on a carbonated system in the basement cuz I go thru so much soda water since I got sober……….this looks so much easier or at least till he gets around to the other…… I’d love to win since we have spent a huge wad on the big one
Comment by penny peyrot — February 7, 2010 @ 10:24 am
We’ve been eyeing these systems. I’d love to give it a shot!
Comment by Nell — February 7, 2010 @ 11:48 am
That looks like it would be perfect for trying out homemade versions of dry soda!
Comment by fairydogmother — February 7, 2010 @ 12:27 pm
I’ve been considering one of these for a while. I’ve already cut down on bottled water and soda so this would be the last straw in becoming disposable-beverage-container free – pun intended!
Comment by Emily — February 7, 2010 @ 4:59 pm
I love this machine. I have so many ideas for some homemade flavored soda!
Comment by Gavin — February 8, 2010 @ 12:21 am
I’d love to have one of these for our family reunion. We are going to have around 40 people over. I’m looking at any all ways to reduce the waste involved with holding the event. A Sodastream would take care of the drink bottle/can issue!
