From the bicycle meeting to the L.A. Auto Show

Damien of Streetsblog LA reports on the bke-heavy meeting of the Transportation Committee of the LA City Council yesterday. Briefly:

* LA Bike Master Plan: no real new info was given. As we already knew, a draft of the plan will be available for public comment come January.

* Bike licensing. Councilman LaBonge wants the LAPD to suspend giving out tickets to unlicensed bikes by Wednesday; we’ll see what actually ends up happening.

* Bike share plan: LA Department of Transportation was told to begin soliciting proposals to bring bike sharing to Los Angeles.

* Bike sharrows: “The City is waiting to hear back from a consultant who they hope will help them design a plan to help them decide what streets they can consider putting Sharrows on,” writes Damien.

* Cyclist bill of rights: Councilman Rosendahl promised the bill would only be changed if the City Attorney brings up a legal issue.

Read Damien’s post for more details on the mood and contents of the proceedings, or listen to Enci’s recording of the meeting at illuminateLA.

Biking in LA also has an exuberant report about the bike-heavy meeting: “By the time the meeting was over, I was ready to kiss Rosendahl.” In general, attendees seemed to have liked what the Transpo Committee members had to say — but not so much the attitudes of the LAPD or LADOT. Writes Biking in LA about LADOT:

Sharrows have been used successfully in a number of cities for years now — even right here in Los Angeles, on the campus of UCLA. And yet, to hear [LADOT officials] talk, you would assume it was some sort of new technology that must be tested in double blind safety studies to prove they won’t explode or turn us into brain-sucking mutant zombies.

In other wheely news: Frazgo at blogging.la test drove the more eco-friendly cars at the L.A. Auto Show, and reports that “driving green doesn’t mean giving up fun.” Read his detailed post to find out which green car he liked most.

  1. awesome! go LA!
If los angeles can do it, with the magnitude of blvds and car traffic, it’d be a great example of people coming together for the better outcome.

  2. I bought a EZIP hybrid bike that is beyond awesome…check it out! WE must make more of an effort in this nation to become energy independent. Not enough credit is being given to the high gas prices this past year and it’s serious damage on our economy and society. That one factor alone has caused serious stress in both individuals and businesses. A record number of homes and jobs have been lost as a direct result. And, while we are doing the happy dance around the lower prices at the pumps OPEC is announcing cuts to manipulate the prices upward again. We must get on with becoming energy independent. We can’t take another year like this past. There is a wonderful new book out about the energy crisis and what it would take for America to become energy independent. It covers every aspect of oil, what it’s uses are besides gasoline, our reserves, our depletion of it. Every type of alternative energy is covered and it’s potential to replace oil. He even has proposed legislative agenda’s that would be necessary to implement these changes along with time frames. This book is profoundly informative and our country needs to become more informed and move forward with becoming energy independent. Green technology would not only provide clean cheap energy it would create millions of badly needed new jobs. The Book is called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence NOW by Jeff Wilson. Our politicians all need to read this book.
