If you’ve left off filing your taxes until today (or tomorrow!), make sure you get your $30+ refund from the IRS. Apparently, the IRS charged an illegal tax on phone service between February 28, 2003 and August 1, 2006 — and has been ordered to pay that tax back, with interest.
So assuming you had a phone between 2003 and 2006, the government owes you money. I didn’t know ’bout this refund when I e-filed my taxes back in February, but apparently FileYourTaxes did and auto-claimed it for me. Yay!
Unless you wanna spend about 13 hours going through all your phone bills during that 41-month period, just get the standard refund — $30 for individuals — by filling out a line on your tax return. Get step-by-step instructions from Refunds for Good, a nonprofit website, which also suggests you donate the refund to an environmental nonprofit. It’s the National Day of Climate Action, after all.
