
Ethical consumerism’s gotten easier! A new startup called GoodGuide offers free, scientist-vetted rankings on products to make shopping easier for eco-conscious consumers. From Wired:
GoodGuide’s database, the product of a decade of supply chain research, draws on more than 650 data sources, some public and some private, to create basic metrics for what’s safe to use and “green”…. GoodGuide contains hundreds of datapoints about products broken into three categories of impacts: health, social and environmental.
GoodGuide’s even going to deliver the info to your celly, so you can get the green info you need while in the mall or grocery store:
Beginning tomorrow, you’ll be able to receive text messages about products based on their UPC code and an iPhone app will follow within weeks. And that’s not counting the applications that outside users could come up with: GoodGuide will have an open API that exposes the site’s data for other applications.
The site’s still in beta, but maybe GoodGuide become like EWG’s Skin Deep cosmetic safety database — except for all consumer products. Already, GoodGuide and EWG seem to admire each others’ work — GoodGuide’s sunscreen guide basically takes EWG’s list of recommended sunscreens and puts them to the real-life test.
