Green biz certification for Santa Monica

Posted by Siel in environment, losangeles (Wednesday October 25, 2006 at 11:10 am)

I didn’t even know Santa Monica was working on this! But apparently, the city’s already succeeded: Santa Monica celebrates the launch of its Green Business Certification Program tomorrow night at an invitation-only event!

And they didn’t invite me :( Boo :(

To get the Santa Monica Green Business Certification, businesses have to implement green purchasing, solid waste and recycling, energy efficiency, water efficiency, pollution prevention and transportation practices. Then, businesses have to conduct energy, water and waste materials assessments, and pay a small fee for an onsite visit.

The reward: A GBC window decal, and permission to use the GBC logo on promotional materials.

The Santa Monica apparently was inspired by the Bay Area Green Business Program, which “has been an effective means of promoting local businesses that reduce pollution, protect the environment and public health, and make a positive contribution to their community.”

Got a certifiable Santa Monica biz? Find out more on the Santa Monica’s Green Business Certification Program website :) I’d certainly pop in if I saw the decal –

Update, 12/9/08: Now L.A. hopes to have a green business certification plan in place in six months.
