Though I haven’t tried it myself, I mentioned Green Speed Dating events a couple times here — only to hear back from a couple girl friends who took the plunge about how undateable the men at the event were — at which point I stopped mentioning them so as not to make more women angry.
Now comes a partial answer of sorts as to why the gals were so displeased: Dating site Ok Cupid’s blog OkTrends asked its users to rate male / female attractiveness, to come to this this hilarious but totally true conclusion (via Fimoculous):
As you can see from the gray line, women rate an incredible 80% of guys as worse-looking than medium.

It gets funnier, because apparently, women are down to date guys they find kinda fugly:
The average-looking woman has convinced herself that the vast majority of males aren’t good enough for her, but she then goes right out and messages them anyway.
The stats for guys are pretty funny too. Read the whole article — Your Looks and Your Inbox — for more laughs.
Even if 100% of the men at Green Speed Dating events fell into the bottom 80% that women apparently find fugly, I don’t think the women’s harsh judgments is the entire reason why the events haven’t been working so far. My friends told me the event attracted twice as many women as men, for one thing. On the upside, my friends also had some really entertaining stories about the undatable guys they’d met! Has anyone else gone and had a better experience?

Warning: married guy’s perspective.
Although kind of funny, I would like to point out that there may be some nuggets of awesomeness among these same guys. In my experience, there have certainly been some apparently attractive women that end up being very ugly. Also, I have met some apparently average looking gals that end up being the most attractive. I would imagine the same for guys.

I’m guessing that’s why women will give some guys they don’t initially attractive a chance :)
