Green weekender: Eco-friendly fun for Valentine’s Day

>> Take a virtual tour of The Green Buildings of Santa Monica via a visual presentation and discussion led by Anna Jacobson, Morley Builders project manager, and UCLA Instructor James Bassett. The event happens Wed., Feb. 10 from 7 pm – 8:30 pm at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium in the Santa Monica Main Public Library 601 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica.

>> Join the Move LA Valentine Celebration. The local pro public transit nonprofit is raising funds while celebrating car-free travel in L.A. with music from KCRW’s Tom Schnabel, live music from Latin salsa band Opa Opa, and more. The party begins Thurs., Feb. 11 from 6 pm – 10 pm at The Center at Cathedral Plaza, 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles. $50 gets you in.

>> Learn from experienced fruit tree growers and experts, who’ll talk about how to protect flavor and quality of fruit at The Immoveable Feast: Deep Roots and Lofty Dreams. The FREE event happens Thurs., Feb. 11 from 7 pm – 9 pm at the Santa Monica Main Public Library’s MLK auditorium at 601 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica.

>> Catch a FREE screening of Home, an eco-documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, with fellow environmentalists at an event organized by the Infrastructure Academy. The screening begins Thurs., Feb. 11 at 6 pm at Zanuck Theater, Fox Studios, 10201 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles. Online RSVP required.

>> Singular, a magazine for happily single people, is organizing a Valentine’s Day Beginner’s Mountain Bike Ride in the L.A. area. Bike 5-6 miles through the Sullivan Canyon in Brentwood on Valentine’s Day from 10 am to 1 pm. Earlier: 10 Green ways to have fun on Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles.

>> Explore your love for mushrooms on Valentines Day at the 26th Annual Los Angeles Wild Mushroom Fair, put on by the Los Angeles Mycological Society. The fair will explore all things mushroom: mushroom identification, wild shroom displays, cooking demos, growing demos, books, and more. Be there Sun., Feb.14 from 10 am – 4 pm at Ayres Hall in the The Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia. The fair’s free with admission to the garden, but tickets to hear the keynote speaker, Paul Stamets, cost $21 each.

>> Sign up to take a Green Living Workshop with Santa Monica nonprofit Sustainable Works. Workshop participants meet once a week for 6 weeks to learn all about shrinking your carbon footprint. The next round of classes begin early March; pick from Mon., Tues., or Wed. night meetings. Cost: $25 for Santa Monica residents, $50 for L.A. residents.

>> Plan early and sign up now for L.A. Bicycle Coalition’s 2010 L.A. River Ride, happening June 6. The ride — or rides, really, since you can pick from a very short kid’s ride to a 100-mile Century ride — begins and ends at the Autry Center, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles.
