Greening Anne’s card biz

Posted by Siel in consumerism (Saturday November 25, 2006 at 7:46 pm)

My friend Anne just started a card biz, making her own pretty cards and envelopes.

So I asked: Are any of the cards made with recycled paper? Would def. like to get some if so :)

Anne: eeck…. unfort the place that i order from isn’t recycled – but you’ve prompted me to look into it! i def would love to do only recycled!! will keep you updated!

I thought I’d update her first, just to help her out :) My suggestions, in order of niftiness:

Elephant Dung Paper. Yes you read right — Scrappin’, stampin’, and art quality ellie dung paper. And no, it doesn’t smell — I felt and sniffed some at Green Fest in San Francisco. The paper’s part of an effort to help farmers and elephants in Sri Lanka coexist by making elephants an economically sustainable resource for humans — without killing the elephants. And the paper’s quite purty, though somewhat thicker and more textured than the paper Anne’s been using so far.

Twisted Limb. I already used Twisted Limb scraps to make gift tags, but I’m thinking they work just as well for cards, cuz Twisted Limb sells some :) But for the DIY-er, Twisted Limb sells paper to bend to your will :)

Green Earth Office Supply. Don’t let the clunky, unfriendly web design scare you off! This web store offers everything from 100% post-consumer card stock to kenaf stationery to — if you give up the DIY thing — tree-free notecards and postcards.

Yes, these papers aren’t always gonna be the exact same look and feel that you’re used to. However, sometimes our best creative juices are unleashed by unexpectedly restricted parameters!

But if you’re at your card-making straw, you might at least try checking out the recycled goods at Office Depot (look for recycled Xerox stuff), Staples. These papers are like regular paper — and come in colors. Bright ones!

  1. For hilarious poltical greeting cards, and non-political, may I suggest the site of my good friend and colleague in the Green Party, Cathy McKnight:

    Enjoy the laughs,
