I asked my friend Anne (right, and first featured here) to investigate Swim Cafe in Chicago, just cuz it sounded so cool — and served fair trade coffee from Just Coffee!
Here’s Anne and her friend Sam’s report:
All of their coffee is fair trade, which they seem very proud of. The food was very good — in fact, Sam claims it was the best tuna sandwich of her life. The baked goods are also delic – they are all mini — and V. mini.
There was a pretty limited amount of organic choices and no farmers market items (however, very few Chicago places seem to have farmers market stuff – must be more of a cool LA thing :).
The atmosphere was very chill – casual, steady stream of people, but not too crowded. Oh, and the name comes from the fact that they are across the street from a natatorium (i.e. a big indoor pool).
Kinda makes me wanna visit the windy city again…. In the meantime, I’m thinking of doing a series of semi-guest-posts from people visiting fair trade cafes in their area. Must investigate further.
For now, thanks Anne and Sam!
Update, 7/27/07: I finally got to visit Swim Cafe myself!

Well, here I am visiting the parents in my hometown of Chicago and I see this. I don’t drink fair trade or any coffee for that matter, but I’ll spread the word to the fam and friends…

Those chicks, Sam and Anne, are hot!!! I’m definitely going to check them at the Swim Cafe. Is there a pool? Should I wear my speedo?
