Horrors in Hot Pockets: An Illustrated ingredient list

Posted by Siel in food (Monday February 22, 2010 at 12:45 pm)

Do partially hydrogenated soybean oil and corn syrup solids make you drool — especially when packed together with imitation mozzarella cheese and artificial butter flavor — and spiked with distilled monoglycerides and L-Cysteine hydrochloride? You’ve eaten all that — if you’ve nibbled on Hot Pockets.

Ham and Cheese Hot Pockets ingredients poster by Justin Perricone

That’s what the poster above by freelance graphic designer Justin Perricone illustrates (via Boing Boing). The poster’s basically a prettily-designed list of ingredients in a Ham & Cheese Hot Pocket!

The overpackaged and overprocessed convenience microwavable snack is already an edible food-like product that’s avoided by many environmentalists and health-conscious foodies. But even the average factory-farmed cheeseburger-eating Joe might think twice about buying Hot Pockets if the product’s ingredient list made up the front of its packaging. According to Boing Boing, this poster’s the first in a series — so follow Justin’s blog for more well-illustrated poster-sized motivations to eat better.

Grossed out by the ingredient list — but still kind of craving Hot Pockets despite your better green instincts? Try baking homemade hot pockets! eHow has a simple recipe for homemade hot pockets with just 10 ingredients (plus water) — and if you opt for organic ingredients plus local, sustainably-produced ham and cheese, you’ll have yummier, healthier fresh-baked, feel-good snacks.

  2. My husband and I swore off pre-packaged food more than a year ago and it was the best decision we’ve ever made. I instantly lost 10 pounds and no longer feel tired and lethargic all the time.

  3. I seem to be the only person who didn’t lose weight by eating greener — I guess I started eating more! :P I definitely feel healthier though :)

  4. We made our own version of the pizza ones last night using Joseph’s brand lavash, turkey pepperoni, mozzerella cheese, and tomato sauce with seasonings, oh and sauteed mushrooms! They were a huge hit and sooooo much better than the “original”. I plan to do more fillings soon.

  5. Prepackaged foods are scary. I’ve been making my own pizza for a least the last 3 years and I have recently sworn off cereal. I’m experimenting with making my own from actual whole grains.

  7. My husband has lost between 10-15 lbs. I was petite to begin with, but I feel better in general, less cravings and more energy :)
