What to take to a dinner party thrown by your favorite non-drinker: Kombucha champaign.
I got a pretty bottle of this from Dave of Art of Tea (which I wrote about here), who’s started a little offshoot company called Get Kombucha.
The kombucha — an organic brew made by Kombucha 2000 — seemed a little fizzier, like real champaign, to me than other kombucha, but I usually don’t drink kombucha out of a champaign glass, and doing so this time prolly colored my perception a bit. At $12.95 a 25.4 oz. bottle, it’s not a bad deal for special occasions, considering its festive wrapping — though perhaps you might want to savor it a bit more instead of guzzling the whole thing in a sitting like I did (I was hung over).
One qualm I have about Get Kombucha is its use of plastic bottles. Dave’s opinion’s that bottling becomes v. expensive, and says plastic bottles okay for 7-10 days. I dunno — Dave gave me one plastic bottle of kombucha, and the frightening way the plastic bottle was bulging out from the fermentation process made me dubious. That, combined with the fact that everyone I know who’s into kombucha shuns plastic like the plague makes me think plastic-encased kombucha’s not a good business move, even if cheaper at the get go….
Get Kombucha does offer kombucha in 6 oz glass bottles too — although those aren’t any less expensive, even in bulk, than buying kombucha by the bottle at Whole Foods or Co-opportunity. If you’re a real kombucha connoiseur, you might be able to appreciate the subtle difference in taste and bubbliness of Kombucha 2000….
Luckily, the kombucha champaign too comes in glass bottles, so I know what I’m taking to the next party at my friend Robin’s. She’s never actually thrown a party since I’ve known her, but maybe the kombucha champaign will inspire one?

I have to say, “Kombucha Champaign” sounds like a platter-eyed anime character.
