For non-emergency city services, 311 (toll free) is the number to remember. From there, you can do everything from find your local library to get graffiti removed. There’s also an online City Services Directory.

Your car get towed? Call parking enforcement: 213.485.4184. Give them cross streets or an address nearest where your car was parked, and they’ll tell you the address and phone number of the towing place your car’s been dragged to. It’s also the number to call if you need an imprudently parked car removed from your driveway.

You hear police sirens all the time, but you never know where the shit’s actually goin’ down. To know what’s going on in your ‘hood, check out the LAPD e-policing and crime maps. Plug in your address and zip, and you’ll find out exactly how many burglaries, thefts, assaults, and rapes have happened within a 5-mile radius in the last week. You may find, however, that this map provides way more info than you really wanted to know — the crimes are shown as pinpoints on a map, specific to the block where the incident occured.

Since Megan’s law went into effect in 2004, you can find a list of California registered sex offenders online — There are 17 in my zipcode. Search by name, address, zip, or county — The listings are scarily detailed: full name, picture, full address for some, with a brief description of the offenses the person committed, i.e. “lewd or lascivious acts with child under 14 years.”

And if you’ve got a lil time to kill, read heroic rescue stories on the Los Angeles Fire Department blog.

  1. That’s a wonderful resource, Siel. I can imagine how scary it can be though to see those pictures of sex offenders in your neighborhood…suddenly you’d be paranoid everywhere you go. I hope not. I would be at least be very conscious. I don’t think there’s such thing like that in Antibes.
