So genocide isn’t what most people like to think about on a Saturday night — but genocide isn’t what people like to think about, period.
Traci of SustainableLA did her part to keep us from turning a blind eye to the current situation in Darfur — by throwing Swap Meet & Happy Hour Reception / Silent Auction to benefit the Darfur Advocacy Fund on Saturday.
I got there after the Green Party shindig, had a glass of wine, then got into the silent bidding. The trouble was, not a lot of other people seemed to bother with the silent auction — which really was the point of the whole party.
It disheartened me a bit — and not just cuz I bid on too many things, maybe :P The stuff on auction was really, really cool stuff — gift baskets from Earth Accents, BTC Elements, Organic Interior Design, etc.! And some of this stuff ended up going for under their valued prices.
I left feeling a bit like the silent auction got treated the way the actual situation in Darfur gets treated in the US — as something that’s happening really far away that we don’t need to get involved in…
Don’t know what Darfur is? Here’s a good FAQ from the Washington Post that’ll help bring you up to speed. And check out the Darfur Advocacy Fund for more info and to get further involved.
Update, 9/18/06: The latest SustainableLA event: A green apartment open house :)

Props to Siel for bidding on every item to help get the auction moving. You go woman.

Hi, I’m Fabrizio from Italy.
It’s incredible, but Italian media don’t speak about Darfur (1 hour only in 2005). People don’t know what ‘s happening in Darfur. So I have had an idea..please, ask to italian media to speak on tragedy in Darfur! There is a form, in my blog, to write them!!
