Latest in de-car-ing: A better Rose Bowl and other clunky discussions

green-pasadenaThis post’s by Damien Newton of Streetsblog LA, who catches you up on the latest local de-car-ing news:

Rose Bowl: The city of Pasadena has done a complete about-face on the issue of bikes on the “Rose Bowl Loop” in the past couple of years.  In 2007, responding to concerns about the safety of sharing road space between pedestrians, cyclists and motorists the city thought about banning bikes from the three-mile loop.  After the wildly succesful “Car Free Rose Bowl” event last year, the city is now proposing to increase space for non-motorized users.  One proposal even has them removing a car travel lane.

Federal Government: While the Obama administration continues to earn high marks from many on the environment, his transportation team is sending mixed messages at best.  On one hand, it’s good that he continues to find more money for High Speed Rail, even if it does come with another $1.4 billion for highways.  At the same time, he stands firmly behind another $2 billion on top of the $1 billion that’s being thrown at the Cash for Clunkers Program.

Turnstiles: Last week Streetsblog reported that Metro was stalling and studying their turnstile program.  So what are those turnstiles being installed in union station for?  Metro staff tells me it’s just part of the test.
