Latest in de-car-ing: Bikes on trains, Google Transit, and a reprimand

Posted by Damien in bicycle,bus/rail,de-car-ing (Monday July 6, 2009 at 5:16 pm)

This post’s by Damien Newton of Streetsblog LA, who catches you up on the latest local de-car-ing news:

7-2-09-doc-thompsonGoogle Transit: Finally!  Google transit is here for Metro! To try it out just head over to maps.google.com and start typing.

Transit Funding:  By this time, we all know that the Governor doesn’t think much of transit.  Whenever he had a chance, he robbed funding dedicated by voters for transit subsidies.  In this year’s draft budget, the operating subsidy from the state was $0; leading to a thousand “Judgment Day for Transit” jokes.  This week, a judge said that these budget plans are illegal, and ordered the Governor to start writing checks to transit agencies around the state.

Metro Board: For regular watchers of the Metro Board, aka LACMTA, the reign of King Tony couldn’t end soon enough.  While the Mayor of Los Angeles got re-inaugurated on 7/1; pedestrian friendly Glendale City Councilman Ara Najarian took the Chairmanship of Metro’s Board of Directors.

Bikes on Trains: Did you know that it’s illegal to take your bike on Metro trains at certain times of the day?  Good news!  That won’t be the case for much longer.  Metro is holding two hearings this Wednesday as it considers to remove the rush hour bike ban.
