Latest in de-car-ing: Metro gets graded, parking spots get greened

Metro 720 busThis post’s by Damien Newton of Streetsblog LA, who catches you up on the latest local de-car-ing news:

Buses: A week ago the Bus Rider’s Union released a report grading Metro’s bus service based on surveys of their riders. The grade? A D-. Metro didn’t seem too concerned as a survey they commissioned earlier this year showed different results.

Bus-Only Lanes: Those waiting for the bus-only lanes to come to Wilshire Boulevard are going to have to wait a little longer. Based on concerns that the lanes could cause more traffic and other concerns raised in outreach meetings last year, the agency is ordering up a full environmental review. Of course, those waiting in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills will have to wait even longer as their cities haven’t signed on to the plan yet.

Park(ing) Day – Two weeks from today is Park(ing) Day, Friday September 18, the once a year event where activists, architects, planners and anyone else that wants to turns parking spaces into parks for one day. The point of Park(ing) Day is to draw attention to one of the hidden costs of street parking, the amount of public space that is given up to accommodate the storage of people’s personal property.

This year, even if you aren’t going to build your own park, you have two chances to use a bike to be part of Park(ing) Day. Streetsblog is sponsoring a Park(ing) Day ride with dozens of stops planned throughout the Westside and Downtown and planned starts at 8:00 A.M. in Santa Monica, 10:00 A.M. in Culver City, noon at East Hollywood, and 2:00 P.M. in Downtown L.A.

The other opportunity is to take a slower tour with the Greensters, who will roll with food, tunes, ice-cream and seed bombs. The Greensters will be bringing the park with them, while the Streetsbloggers will be going to as many parks as possible.

  1. i think the reason mta reported a higher score is because, from my experience, the person handing out the surveys looks at your card and comments on it
