This post’s by Damien Newton of Streetsblog LA, who catches you up on the latest local de-car-ing news:

Lance: Lance Armstrong tweeted, “Hey LA — get out of your cars and get on your bikes. Time to ride. 7:30 tomorrow am. Griffith Park, LA Zoo parking lot. See you there.” 500 people showed up.
Are you ready for some football?: Backers of bringing a new football stadium to the City of Industry tried some misdirection this week. In the back halls of Sacramento, developer Ed Roski tried to convince legislators to give his football stadium a pass on environmental clearances and local planning ordinances. Once the light of day was shined a coalition of transportation reformers, environmentalists, the LA County Board of Supervisors and LA Times helped sack the plan.
Santa Monica’s Bike Award: A couple of months ago the League of American Cyclists awarded the City of Santa Monica a “Bronze Medal” for it’s efforts to make the city bike-friendly. However, many cyclists feel that award is unwarranted because the SMPD seems unaware of bike laws, hands out tickets like candy at group rides and refuses to enforce the “bike-only” rule on the beach path. Meanwhile Cyclists Inciting Change thru Live Exchange (C.I.C.L.E.) has some ideas to help Santa Monica be worthy of a Gold.
Metrolink: Last week marked the one year anniversary of the deadly and horrific Metrolink crash in Chatsworth.
