Life Can Be So Car-Free

253082693 308e0597d2 m Life Can Be So Car FreeIf you have a bike — or actually, any other non-car transportation option, like feet — hopefully I’ll see you at C.I.C.L.E.’s Life Can Be So Car-Free event on Saturday.

Cuz if yer not there, you’ll miss out on films, live music, interpretive walks, rides and the view of a gorgeous sunset behind the Los Angeles skyline. All of it’s FREE :)

When: Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, 5 pm – 10 pm
Where: Los Angeles State Historic Park. 1245 N. Spring St. (next to Chinatown Station, where the Not a Cornfield Project site used to be.) Here’s a Google map.

And being a car-free event, C.I.C.L.E. and supporters have done a damn good job of making it easy to get there, sans gas-guzzler.

The way I plan to get there — via a satellite bike ride! There’ll be 3 in the westside, with pick-ups in Santa Monica, UCLA, and Culver City. Pasadena gets its own satellite ride too, with a pick-up in Highland Park. And 2 other groups, Whirly Girls and Bike the Vote, will be coming via their own satellite bike rides –

No pick-up near you? Then consider the bus — lines: 81,46,83,84,85 — or the Gold Line (exit China Town station).

Some of the highlights-to-be:

L.A. River 101, an hour-long intro that’ll let you (re)discover the L.A. River by bicycle with guide Joe Linton, author of “Down by the Los Angeles River: Friends of the Los Angeles River’s Official Guide.” Show up with a bike, patch kit, and pump — The ride leaves promptly at 5 pm.

An interpretive walking tour of the new Historic State Park with Carmelo Alvarez (Not a Cornfield).

There’ll also be lotsa time to enjoy the picnic you brought along, listen to live music, and hang out with fun people trying to de-car in Los Angeles.

I’m 90% sure I’ll be there — It’s just that 9/30 happens to be my moving day (new apt, here I come!), so if I’m wiped out from the effort, I won’t be able to bike over 16 miles… But I’ll try, damnit –

Full schedule on the C.I.C.L.E. site; call 323.478.0060 for more info.
