Los Angeles County Bicycle Plan: Next on the cyclist-activist’s agenda

Posted by Siel in bicycle,de-car-ing,losangeles (Friday January 15, 2010 at 2:53 pm)

Apparently, Los Angeles County now has a Bicycle Advisory Committee — not to be confused with the City of Los Angeles’ Bicycle Advisory Committee — created to advise the county on its Bicycle Plan — not to be confused with the City of L.A.’s bike plan.

The L.A. County Bicycle Advisory Committee‘s website’s rather bare bones right now, and news about theĀ  activities are scattered across several L.A. bike-activist blogs. Here’s what I’ve gathered so far:

>> The L.A. County Bikeway Coordinator is Abu Yusuf, according to BikingInLA. He can be reached at ayusuf@dpw.lacounty.gov or 626.458.3940, if you’ve got further questions about the county bike plan after reading this post.

>> The L.A. County Bicycle Advisory Committee has 14 members, according to Stephen Box at Streetsblog LA. “The office of each County Supervisor was ‘allowed’ to nominate a BAC representative and an alternative, along with Caltrans and the Metro, resulting in 14 total members.” Among the members are Joe Linton — a.k.a. L.A. Creek Freak, a.k.a. C.I.C.L.E. guy — and Aubrey Provost.

>> The L.A. County Bicycle Plan will focus on bikeways in unincorporated areas and along L.A. County Flood Control District rights-of-way, according to Joe Linton at L.A. Creek Freak. While other cyclists rue that the county plan isn’t a comprehensive one that unifies the plans of municipalities, Joe points out that past overarching plans suffered from the “big staple” effect (stapling all the municipalities’ individual plans together and calling it a county plan).

>> The first LAC Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting (PDF) happened last night. Initially, the public wasn’t invited — due, ostensibly, to lack of car parking. Joe’s complaints apparently got the county to open up its meeting to the public — and to provide bike and transit directions.

I eagerly await Joe’s next post on L.A. Creek Freak to find out what happened at the meeting.

  1. Await no longer, I did a follow-up post covering the plan specifics I learned last night. See http://lacreekfreak.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/more-specifics-on-the-countys-bike-plan/

Also, credit where credit due. Though I did nudge quietly, I think it was Stephen Box’s louder critique that opened the meeting to the public. It wasn’t until his article appeared at Streetsblog that the county announced that the meeting would be open to the public.

  2. Thanks for the update — and good to know! You know, Joe, what you need is to be on more transit committees! :P Do you ever sleep?
