My ode to PAM (Pregnancy Awareness Month)

Posted by Siel in feminist/politics,santamonica (Monday April 27, 2009 at 1:51 pm)

Apparently, next month marks the second annual Pregnancy Awareness Month — complete with a “Motherhood Begins Now” kick-off event in my own city Santa Monica, of all places. (via Treehugger)

Having recently been called a “mommy blogger” by one Edward who seems to be very confused as to what mommy means, I thought I’d celebrate by linking you “Pregnant Woman are Smug,” a hilarious song by Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci with sure-to-become-classic lyrics like “You’re just giving birth now / You’re not Mother Earth now.” (via Broadsheet)

I’m not sure whether the pregnancy month being in May has to do anything with May being “traditionally devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary in Roman Catholic traditions,” according to Wikipedia. May is also Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (yay Koreans!) and Mental Health Awareness Month (yay depressives!) — and also, National Military Appreciation Month — Did you see the L.A. Times article about how the military’s embracing green tech? May’s also apparently Older Americans Month. How old is older?

  1. I’m sure everyone dealing with miscarriages, loss of a child, or any number of other related experiences is thrilled to learn that there is a “Pregnancy Awareness Month.”

  2. First off to the above there are awareness days/weeks/months for all those things.

Pretty sure we are all aware of pregnancy lol. Also it kind of makes me mad because I have Fibromyaglia which is not well known (other than because of lyrica) and is hard to treat and we only get one day! What the hell?!

I have been called a mommy blogger as well. People just seem to think if you are green, a woman and blogging you must have kids.

  3. Ha! Glad to know I’m not the only one with virtual kids imagined up by others!

  4. Sorry. Those days don’t resonate the same way. But really, when is miscarriage awareness month?
