Odacité: Gentle green skin care for sensitive eco-beauty seekers

Posted by Siel in beauty, environment (Friday December 17, 2010 at 6:42 pm)

Here’s a winter beauty regimen for green beauty seekers with sensitive skin or allergies. A clean, green skin care line called Odacité offers gentle, fragrance-free products — freshly made with organic and wild crafted botanicals.

For sensitive environmentalists who find even natural perfumes made from organic essential oils too strong, Odacité provides a calming, pure alternative. Founded by Valérie Grandury, who turned to studying the benefits of plants after a battle with breast cancer, Odacité prides itself in using pure oils and antioxidant plant-based ingredients — with no strange extra fragrances, chemicals, or preservatives. In fact, each batch of Odacité is made fresh and dated so you’ll know to use it within months when the antioxidants and other active ingredients are still fresh — not years like the preservative-laden stuff on drugstore shelves.

The green scores on Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetic safety database highlights Odacité’s green creds. The Beautiful Day Moisturizer — a light, liquidy cream made with organic aloe vera, tea extracts, jojoba oil that my skin instantly drank in — scores a low hazard 1 on Skin Deep. So does Odacité’s Night Time Repair Serum — also a light cream, infused with organic white and rooibos tea.

I loved how both those daily creams were non-greasy and absorbed quickly, leaving my skin moisturized through dry, winter days. The Ultra-Effective Eye Cream too is very moisturizing, with its blend of blue green algae and pomegranate extracts.

Odacité’s cleansers are just as gentle — and quite creamy too. The Rejuvenating Cleanser comes out as a thin, white liquid; the no-foam product gently cleanses and moisturizes without stripping your skin of its natural oils. For a deeper weekly or biweekly cleanse is the Jojoba Beads Exfoliant — a white cream with soft, squishy beads for a very gentle and moisturizing. facial scrub. These cleansers aren’t for you if you like a squeaky clean or more vigorous scrub, but I especially recommend the Rejuvenating Cleanser for women who may be experiencing dry, flaky, or sensitive skin during the winter.

Clean green beauty with wildcrafted botanicals doesn’t come cheap, however. The least expensive product is the Rejuvenating Cleanser, which costs $40 for a 4-ounce bottle. But if you’d like to try the line before committing to a full-sized product, the Organic Skin Detox — a 5-product sample kit — is available for $69.

The Detox Market in Venice, California

Because Odacité’s products are made fresh, you generally can’t find them in stores — except right now, when you can buy hem at Venice’s temporary green pop-up shop The Detox Market. The market was the brainchild of Odacité’s Valérie and her business partner Romain Gaillard. Stop by to try the products before the shop closes on January 15.

  2. Thanks for the great write up and find. I can’t wait to try it! I am a huge fan of jojoba as one of the miracle oils/waxes, and jojoba beads are the only exfoliant for my sensitive skin. The price looks great for such skin and eco-friendly ingredients, especially compared to the department and even some drugstore brands pricing for non peer reviewed claims and many toxic ingredients.
