Like an idiot, I totally overslept and missed Bill Clinton’s appearance in LA in support of prop 87 last week :( Damn!
So to make up for it, I went to a Yes on 87 houseparty last night. These were happening all over California — Yay! — but the one I went to was hosted by Joseph in Santa Monica, a short biking distance from me :)
8 of us gatherd to talk politics over some yummy pirate’s booty, Trader Joe’s chips, wasabi peas, and wine. The experience was really fun and engergizing — Here I got to chat with neighbors I’d never had the opportunity to meet before, about an issue we all felt deeply passionate about.
The Yes on 87 people had put out a lil video for us to watch — tho we had major probs with that, since everyone all over the state was trying to stream it at the same time. We had better luck with the following conference call :)
One important thing I took away from the houseparty regarding prop 87 — You know all those negative ads alleging that prop 87 would raise gas prices? We all know they’re funded by the oil companies, who so far’ve put $68 million toward defeating prop 87.
The thing is: Since when do oil companies care ’bout OUR pocketbooks?
Another important thing I took away: Political engagement with neighbors is fun!!
This provides a nice segway to a reminder ’bout my No on 85 party — Cocktails for Choice! — I’m having this Thursday. If anyone from the houseparty last night’s reading green LA girl for the first time — You’re invited! Hope to see you, again :)
