I just have one lone pink townie, and I’m wondering if I should get her a friend –

Getting a second bike kind of goes beyond the life simplification that I aspire to.

It depends on what the 2nd bike will be used for.
I have 2 different types of bikes, which allows me to pick one that better fits the needs for the trip.
One is a really light road bike for longer distances or if need to get somewhere quickly, but I often get flats on its thin tires from all the pot holes in LA. It was really useful a few years ago when I commuted from downtown LA to Long Beach.
The 2nd is an old hybrid (mountain bike with road tires) that I’ve had for almost 10 years. I never have to worry about it getting stolen or getting flat tires from potholes and bumps on the road, but it is much slower, heavier, and isn’t in the best condition.

siel, my friend, your survey is flawed. what if a person owns 3 bikes? i have a fancy road bike, a daily commuter bike and a burningman/when friends come to visit bike. :)
ps, i’m leaving transfair! i got a job with the SF department of the environment doing outreach and marketing. you have a friend in the city government! i start on sept. 17. woo hoo!
