Saturday surveys: Offsetting my trip to Israel

3493705247 494436ef63 m Saturday surveys: Offsetting my trip to IsraelTomorrow, I’m flying to Israel for a week-long clean technology tour. I’m very psyched, if a bit stressed right now.

However, the round trip flight will cover 15,109 miles — and release 3,978 lbs of CO2 according to Terrapass.

Terrapass is happy to offset that for me for $23.80. But at the Blankspaces panel I was on, I talked about how the money you’d spend on buying an offset you’d have a hard time tracking may be better spent as a donation to a local eco-nonprofit whose work you support.

So which nonprofit should I donate to?

Poll closes at the end of the day on May 10, which is the day I’ll be flying back to LAX.

  1. Actually, Treepeople and Heal the Bay are pretty well funded compared with Friends of the LA River. Raising awareness of the wonderful LA River and getting the support of the LA City Council and Corp. of Engineers to bring the river back to it’s former non-concrete encased beauty should be a priority that everyone supports.

  3. How about giving this tiny, ridiculous little morsel to a Palestinian refugee who is not allowed to join you on the trip, because they are not allowed to go to Israel?

Israel, as a main player in the Global Military-Industrial Complex, is inherently unsustainable and any “clean tech” developed there is simply greenwash.

  6. I agree with Stephen, FOLAR, although well known among city officials is still little known among residents. SO my vote goes there. I love treepeople, but they are doing well by comparison. (Sorry andy)
